This morning Chief Councillor of the Haisla Nation Crystal Smith participated by video conference in a Canada2020 event on how LNG Canada got to a positive FID in October.

Crystal spoke passionately about what this Project means to the Haisla – and Indigenous communities across northern B.C. She talked about how the project will help address social and economic issues in the communities.

She spoke about her own personal experience with suicide, and how being a participant in industrial development, as opposed to a bystander, will make a true, lasting and life-changing difference to her people.

Crystal talked about the meaningful engagement that LNG Canada undertook wth Haisla, and how, as stewards of the land and water, Haisla did their ‘due diligence’ on the Project, prior to offering their support.

She said it is patronizing and inappropriate for outside interests to oppose LNG development on Indigenous lands, in direct contravention to the interests of First Nations people living in the north and impacted by development. An eloquent and passionate personal reflection on what LNG Canada means to Haisla and Indigenous people in B.C.
